Shirley Kathleen Penn, 85, of 6325 Rockwell Dr NE, died Tuesday April 28, 2009 in St. Luke’s Hospital following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel today from 4-7 p.m.
Survivors include Russell, her husband of 62 years, her children, Gary Penn and fiancé’ Jean Medellin of Hayward, California, Sandra Minger and husband Mark of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Cynthia Penn-Duecker and husband Lynn Duecker of Piedmont, California, and Gregory Penn and wife Haydee of Sypris, Texas, a sister, Patricia Kirby of Novi, Michigan, 9 grandchildren, Ben Avis, Becky Smith, Kyla Avis, Byran Avis, Ryan Duecker, Jason Duecker, Angelica Villanueva, Marshall Penn, Jordan Penn and 5 great grandchildren, Mariza, Roberto, Juaquin, Haley, Charlotte. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Gordon Smith.
Shirley was born March 7, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Fern and Eleanor Marshall Smith. She married Russell Howard Smith there on September 7, 1924. Shirley worked for St. Luke’s Hospital as a central service technician. She loved to square dance, crochet, read and travel and her favorite was spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
