Lila B. Freeman, 87, of Atkins, died April 24, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, April 27, 2009 at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, Atkins. Rev. Mike Andrew will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Sunday, April 26, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her sister Violet Gratton of Dubuque, 9 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, sisters Dorothy Cornwell and Eleanor Coohey, and brothers Donald and Lyle Snyder.

Lila was born July 3, 1921 in McGregor, the daughter of Jesse L. and Martha A. (Place) Snyder. She served her country honorably during WWII in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, receiving the rank of Staff Sergeant. She was united in marriage to Howard S. Freeman on September 29, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. She owned her own beauty shop which was adjacent to her husband’s business, Freeman Electric. She later was employed at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, and the Coca Cola Company. She was a member of the American Legion, Eastern Star White Lilly Chapter 427, and Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Atkins. She enjoyed time with family, especially at the cabin in Vinton named “End of the Trail”. She was greatly involved with the Republican Party in Benton County, as well as volunteering to work at polling locations. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Above all she loved her family and special friends dearly, and she will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Lila’s honor.
