Memorial

Melvin J. Coppock, 82, of 2654 Rainier Ct. NE, died Monday morning, March 30, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, following an extended illness. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Rev. Donald Klein will officiate. A reception will follow at the church. Graveside services and entombment at 1:30 PM in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday with a Rosary beginning at 6:30 PM.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Coppock; two sons Mark (Mary) and Loren (Patti) both of Cedar Rapids; two daughters Marsha (Herb) Plimpton of Hillsborough, CA, and Julie (Jim) Stepanek of Cedar Rapids; a twin sister, Marilyn (Ed) Carpenter of Urbandale, Iowa; 10 grandchildren: John Coppock, Kate Middleton, Ryan and Sean Hallerud, Trisha McClure, Michelle and Peter Stepanek, Kevin and Michael Doyle, and Jennie Benke; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Myron and his wife Marion.

Melvin was born July 24, 1926, in Lisbon, Iowa, the son of Irwin and Isabel (Willson) Coppock. He was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1944 and served in the Pacific. He married Helen Hartin on June 22, 1947, in Cedar Rapids.

Melvin was employed by Dows Dairy for 26 years and Erusha Realtors for several years thereafter. He and Helen owned a number of local apartment buildings for 46 years, until their retirement in 1998. He was a faithful member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

We will remember him for his smile and his quiet and humble disposition. He was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather.

The family wishes to thank the Mercy Hospice House Staff and caregivers for their dedicated care of Melvin.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the Dennis and Donna Hospice House of Mercy, or to St. Pius X Catholic Church.
