Memorial
Delmar C. Burns, 84, of Marion, died March 27, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy from complications of lung disease. Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. John Gossman will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where a vigil service will begin at 6:00 PM. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by Marion American Legion Post # 298.
Survivors include his wife Frances; daughter Delores (Dave) Svoboda of Cedar Rapids; son-in-law Dwayne Callahan of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren Micheal (Joyce) Svoboda of Vinton, Sherry (Phil) Carolan of Center Point, Kim (Steve) Bell of Des Moines, Patty Callahan and Michael Callahan all of Mesa, AZ; great grandchildren William Skelton of Des Moines, Zach (Amanda) Svoboda of Minneapolis, Stephanie Svoboda of Waterloo, Jourdan (Colin) Winterhoff of Jacksonville, NC, Marcus and Tyler Carolan of Center Point, and Sean Jorgensen of Mesa, AZ; a brother Clayton (Marian) Burns of Belle Plaine; and a sister Cleone Burkey of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Darlene Callahan; 3 great grand children Britney Ann Carolan, Michael Callahan II, and Baby Bell; brothers Theron, Max, Cletus, Maurice, Orland, and one sister Beulah Ealy.
Delmar was born August 10, 1924 in Tama County the son of Jay and Myrtle (Hamm) Burns. He was a 1942 graduate of Marion High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served on the USS Mifflin and USS Dahlgren in both Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Frances H. Lathrop on February 3, 1951 in Marion, and they enjoyed 58 wonderful years together. He worked for the City of Marion for 35 years, and retired as Street Superintendent on September 30, 1986. He was a member of American Legion Post # 298 for 64 years, and was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Marion. He will be dearly missed by those he has left, but forever remembered for his love and kindness to his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Delmar’s honor may be made to The Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
