Lewis Murray Wernett, 79, of 3386 56th St. Trail in Center Point passed peacefully into his spiritual journey with Jesus on Sunday March 22, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a long illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, two sons, Michael (Donna) of Center Point, and Steven (Margie) of Marion, two daughters, Nancy Wernett of Iowa City and Christine (Joseph) Gigante of Las Vegas, Nevada, and one sister, Ruth (Milton) Stevens of Sarasota, Iowa. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Dustan, Mandy, Cari, Chuck, Pamela, Michael, Joey, Kelly and Matt, and four great grandchildren, Taylor, Emily, Courtney and Mike. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Roy, Walter and Conrad, two sisters, Betty and Vera and two great grandchildren, Hannah and Lauren Squires.

Lewis was born on March 7, 1930 in Preston, MN, the son of Charles and Candace Smith Wernett. He married Carol D. McHugh on July 15, 1950 in Preston, MN. He invented avionic tools in the Tool and Dye Division at Rockwell-Collins for 38 years, retiring in 1987. Lewis and his wife, Carol, grew their 12 acres home into a garden paradise of fruit orchards, pines and trails. Lewis enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed making knives, woodworking and especially time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established in Lewis’ name.
