Memorial

Walter D. “Walt” Nurre, 83, of 1829 8th Ave SE, died peacefully, Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Living Center West. Services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Chaplain Jeremy Hudson of St. Luke’s Hospice will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and after 12:30 PM Wednesday at the chapel.

Survivors include two daughters Mary Lou Fleisher of Cedar Rapids, and Barb (Roger) Shebetka of Springville, two sons Kevin (Laurie) Nurre of Cedar Rapids, and Darrell (Angie) Cannon of Palo, fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren plus three on the way, and his very beloved dog Johnny. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister Germaine Bockenstedt.

Walt was born March 18, 1925 in Petersburg, Iowa to Herbert and Mabel Rubly Nurre. He married Doris (Dorie) Sampson on June 24, 1947 in Earlville, Iowa. She died October 23, 2005. He was employed by Killians in furniture sales. He was a Hawkeye fan when he won the pools, and was a drummer for several dance bands in our area for several years. Both Dorie and Walt were avid polka dancers and dance instructors. He also enjoyed working in his yard.

Walts family wishes to extend special thanks to St. Luke’s Hospice and to Living Center West for their loving and tender care of him.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his name.
