Mary E. Blocker, 92, of 3523 Stoney Point Road SW, passed away February 13, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha after a lingering illness. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Visitation will take place from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where a vigil service will take place at 6:00 PM. Interment will take place at Blessing Cemetery in rural LaPorte City.

Survivors include her daughter, Marie Sandquist; grandchildren Sandra Nelson, Rita Blessing, and John (Wendi) Gabrielson; as well as 9 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 5 step great grandchildren, and 1 step great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Mary was born June 24, 1916 in Toledo, Iowa the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Waterbeck) Machacek. She married Albert Blocker, of Traer, in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1944. Mary moved to Cedar Rapids in 1956 and was employed by Armstrong’s and Killian’s until her retirement. She volunteered at Mercy Hospital for several years. She had made her home with her daughter since 2007. Mary’s greatest joy was helping and doing for other people.

The family is very grateful to Hospice of Mercy for their love and support at this sad time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or to St. Matthew Catholic Church.
