Memorial

John “Heinie” Knake, 90, of Toddville, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, February 1, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice of Mercy, Hiawatha, following an extended illness. Funeral services will take place at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Daniel Kolander of First Lutheran Church will officiate. Friends may call Tuesday, February 3, 2009 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter Deb Heath and husband Bob of Toddville; grandchildren Shanda Heath of Toddville, Loni Garthwaite and husband Tim, and Corey “Jake” McAtee all of Marion; 4 great grandchildren; sisters Liza Meyer, Mary Young, Mate Arrington, Dena Gluntz, Minnie Knake; brother Albert “Bud” Knake; special family members Jeralyn Heath and husband Dennis, and Joanne Heath all of Marion; brother-in-law Aldrich Drahos; and sister-in-law Sue Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Adeline “Connie”, a brother Ed, and a sister Ella Chantos.

John Henry Knake was born August 1, 1918 in Amber, Iowa the son of Louis and Molly (Oltmanns) Knake. He was united in marriage to Adeline M. “Connie” Drahos on November 2, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 2005. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force during the end of WWII. He was employed as a superintendent at FMC for 45 years, retiring on Nov. 2, 1983. He enjoyed woodworking, especially intarsia. He often donated his works for auction to charities to help benefit children. He also enjoyed all types of sports, and successfully bowled a 300 once in his life. Above all he enjoyed the great times spent with family and friends. He was a loving father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed by his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in his honor are made to Camp Courageous.
