Memorial
Howard F. Helm, 94, of 1624 Richmond Rd. NE. died Monday Jan. 26, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a short illness. Services at 10:00 AM on Friday at the Community of Christ Church where there will also be military rites. Pastor David Loy and Rev. Lew Howard will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 6 PM on Thursday.
Survivors include his wife, LaDonie, a daughter, Shirlee Coy and a grandson, Keith (Cindy) Fitzgibbons all of Meeker, Colorado, a step-daughter, Jeanne (Allen) Baker of Cedar Rapids, three step-sons, Richard Reinhold of Apache Junction, Arizona, Russell Reinhold of Cedar Rapids and Randall (Lynn) Reinhold of Iowa City. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, three brothers, William, Robert, Glen, and five sisters, Carol Helm, Eloise McLaughlin, Phyllis Theil, Virginia Brown and Elaine Elikker.
Howard was born on Jan. 12, 1915 in Iowa City, the son of Jesse and Anna Higgensen Helm. He married Betty (Bunnie) Simson on July 21, 1933 in Moline, Ill. She died in 1976. He later married LaDonie M. Tharp Reinhold on Dec. 31, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Howard was the ground maintenance foreman at Kingston Stadium for the Cedar Rapids Community School District, retiring in 1977 after 45 years of service. He was a member of Community of Christ Church, a life member of the VFW, American Legion Hanford Post No. 5 and proudly served in the Navy during WWII.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha in Howard’s name. Military rites by VFW Post No. 788.
