Memorial

George Robert Berg: 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday morning, January 15, at St. Lukes after a period of declining health. Services will be held Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church with Rev. T. Edwards Breed officiating. Entombment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the church after Noon on Saturday . Military services will be conducted by VFW Post #788. George is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Elizabeth “Bette”, a son Thomas Berg and wife Tow of Marshfield, WI and a daughter, Bonnie Nielsen and husband Steven of Cedar Rapids, two sisters, Ruth and Edith. 6 grandchildren, Suitra Wendt of Racine, WI, Jeremy Berg of Marshfield, WI Jessica Wernberg and husband Kurt of Marshfield, WI, Matthew Berg and wife Weltha of Eau Claire, WI, Seth Nielsen and wife Noelle of St. Paul, MN and Brooke Hennigs and husband Steve of Invergrove Heights, MN and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Teddy, a sister, Pauline Nystrom and two brothers, Rev. Frank Berg and Rev. Harold Berg.
George was born October 20, 1923 in Racine,Wisconsin , the son of Frank and Pauline (Underwood) Berg. He attended the University of Wisconsin prior to the war and then the University of Southern California after the war. George married Mary Elizabeth McCray on October 22, 1945 in Beloit, Wisconsin. He served his country during World War II in the Navy. He participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day serving on a LST. George worked at John Deere in Dubuque as an engineer assisting in plant design and layout until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, the Elks Club and VFW Post #788. George loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was a witty man who saw the humor in every situation. He was a wonderful neighbor who was always ready to help. He built several of his own homes and helped both of his children build theirs. We were all blessed to have George as a husband, father, grandfather and friend.
