Memorial

Don R. Geater, 77, of 748 43rd St. NE, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in St. Luke’s Hospital following a short illness. Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Graveside services with military honors at 1 PM Saturday at the Bear Creek Cemetery rural Brandon. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Saturday.

Survivors include his wife Joyce, children, Sue (Ray) Holder, Deb (Michael Swain) Geater, all of Cedar Rapids, Ron Geater and fiancé Ronda Dziak of Fishers, Indiana, and Jason Geater of Iowa City, two brothers John (Irene) Geater, and Lyle (Lillian) Geater all of Vinton, four sisters Betty Linsey, Mary Rogers, and Zelda Bowers all of Vinton, and Dorothy Yerkes of Greene, Iowa, four grandchildren, Austin and Jacey Geater, Seth Skelton, and Tyler Bryant, and three great grandchildren Dakota and Laney Skelton, and Adeline Stimson, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great grandson Tanner Skelton.

Don was born June 10, 1931 near Brandon, Iowa, to Ray and Hazel Edmonds Geater. He married Joyce Marie Biddle on July 2, 1973 in Galesburg, Illinois. He was a truck driver for H & W Motor Express, and had owned and operated the Log Cabin Lounge, and the Fireplace Lounge in Hiawatha. He was a US Airforce Veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of AMVETS Post #6, Swisher American Legion Post # 671, and VFW Post #788.

“Geater” was quite a character who had a huge heart, intimidating scowl, and liked by everyone lucky enough to know him. He loved watching football (bled Iowa black and gold) and was a die-hard Cubbie fan. Geater also enjoyed playing cards, shooting pool, and most of all, drinking a few cold Budweisers with friends. He will be dearly missed by friends and family.

A memorial fund has been established.
