Merce was born on September 24, 1928 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Scolaro) Palumbo. She attended St. Patrick grade and high schools and Mount Mercy College.
On May 21, 1949 she married Daniel J. Pfiffner at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He preceded her in death in November of 1981.
She spent most of her adult life caring for her family and was an excellent cook and baker. Her favorite Italian dishes were always a treat for family and friends. Merce’s love for her grandchildren was endless. She worked as the secretary of St. Patrick Catholic Church and later at Hy-Vee Food Stores, where she loved meeting people and spending time with her extended family.
She was a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she was active in the St. Martha Circle, the Legion of Mary, and the Rosary Society. She also worked in the Pie Booth during many of the Sweet Corn Festivals.
She is survived by daughters Chris (Dan) Peck, Fairfax, IA, and Cheryl (Doug) Hoover, Branson, MO; sons Kevin (Janelle), Ankeny, IA, Kraig (Katie) Monticello, IA, David (Cindy), Marion, IA, John (Ann), Cedar Rapids, and Michael (Carolyn), Brook Park, OH; 20 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, a sister Mary Grace Peters, Cedar Rapids, brothers-in-law Ed Pfiffner, Levittown, PA, Dick (Jerri) Pfiffner, Sun City West, AZ, Jim Pfiffner, Switzerland, and Tom (Irene) Pfiffner, Horseshoe Bay, TX, and sisters-in-law Rosemary (Mike) Fandel, Cedar Rapids, and Marge Pfiffner, Denver, CO, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law Bob Williams, one grandchild, her parents, her father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Hilda Pfiffner, brothers: Anthony, John, and Joe, a sister and brother-in-law Josephine and Kenneth Krumbholz, a sister-in-law Evelyn Pfiffner, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bernice and Neal Barham, and a brother-in-law Cecil Peters.
During this time of great need in our communities the family asks that no flowers or gifts be sent. Memorials can be directed to St. Jude Catholic Church.
St. Cyprian said “We do not say great things we do them.” Merce’s greatest gift to her family was her faith which she shared countless times by her example.
Merce’s children would like to thank the staffs of Northbrook Manor and Hospice of Mercy for the wonderful care and compassion they gave her.
