Memorial

*** Elizabeth J. “Betty” Tyler, 87, of Cottage Grove Place died Friday Dec. 19, 2008 at St. Lukes Hospital after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at Cottage Grove Place (Oak Hall), 2115 1st Ave. SE. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (Gary) Rauch of Boulder, Colorado, Ann Tyler (Peggy Shinner) of Chicago, Illinois and a son Jeffrey (Sara) of Estes Park, Colorado. She is also survived by two grandsons, Peter Rauch (Tanya Rapacz) of Ashland, Massachusetts, Michael Rauch of Tiburon, California and two great grandchildren, Alexander Rauch and Annelise Rauch of Ashland, Massachusetts; a sister, Jane Comstock of St. Charles, Illinois, nephews, Dean Bucknell Comstock of Batavia, Illinois and Paul Comstock of Chicago, Illinois and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Katherine Gunderson and her brother, Walter Jewell Jr.
Betty was born on March 11, 1921 in Decorah, the daughter of Walter and Florence Bucknell Jewell. She graduated from Decorah High School and attended Iowa State University. She married Lloyd E. Tyler on November 29, 1941 in Decorah. They moved to Cedar Rapids, Ames, Champaign, Illinois and then returned to Cedar Rapids in 1972. Lloyd died on Dec. 3rd 2008.
Betty was a woman of diverse interests. She was an avid antique collector, bridge player, community volunteer and a member of the Unitarian Church. Among her many activities she read to blind students, volunteered at Planned Parenthood and Meals on Wheels, and was a literacy tutor. She was as well a strong supporter of reproductive rights.
