Memorial

John W. Collins, 93, of Living Center West died there on Saturday Dec. 6, 2008 after a short illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where there will also be military rites. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife, JoEtta, and a sister, Evelyn Reed of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, James William, John W. III, a daughter, Joyce Elaine and one great grandson, Jaylen.
John was born on June 23, 1915 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Rev. John and Anna Curry Collins. He graduated from Old Washington High School in 1934. He married JoEtta Price on Aug. 30, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1945 and lived in the same house until the flood of 2008. He spent almost all of his working days in federal service, starting with the Rock Island Arsenal, then the Army followed by the Cedar Rapids Post Office and ending with the federal court as a Bailiff, retiring in 1972.
He had been a member of the Mayor’s Ad Hoc Committee on storm sewers, a member of Churches United Board of Directors, Choir Selective Service Board, Trustee and Choir Director of Bethel A.M.E. Church. While in retirement he was a part-time staff worker at Jane Boyd Community House.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Bethel A.M.E. in John’s name.
