Mary was born August 16, 1922 to Charles and Grace Hiegel in Davenport, Iowa. As a young child, the family moved to Cedar Rapids where Mary attended Immaculate Conception School, Franklin High School and Mount Mercy Academy. She married Jack J. Carfrae on May 16, 1943 in Seattle, Washington. When Jack returned from the war, they set up house in Cedar Rapids. Mary was a stay at home mom until 1960 when Jack and Mary decided to open their meat processing business, Carfrae Meat Company. Mary helped Jack any way she could, but she always made sure she was there for the children. She took great pleasure in watching her grandchildren grow up to be young adults. She cherished every moment she could spend with the great grandchildren.
Mary was a wonderful cook, using simple ingredients making a delicious meal. She thoroughly enjoyed reading cookbooks and trying new recipes. Mary was a long time member of St. Matthews Catholic Church and St. Bernadette’s Circle.
The family thanks Dr. Gray, Dr. Ghosh and Mercy Medical Center for the care given to mom.
In memory of Mary, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous or St. Matthews Renovate and Renew Project.
