Donald Van Horn Johnson
I worked with Don for several years at Midwest Foods. We also car pooled to work. Every night when I picked him up it would be right in the middle of Wheel O Fortune. We solved many puzzels on the way to work. We nick named him zook, and I can't remember why now, but we sure had fun everynight at work. I will miss my friend

Dear Vivian, Amy, Mark, and families, I am so saddened to hear of Don's death. Many fond memories came flooding back as I read his obituary. Actually, it's strange calling him Don. He will always be "Dorothy" to me. From the moment we moved to Arizona Ave., he called Mary Anne and me, Chip Sam and Hugo Pete. Would you believe whenever I smell a pipe I think of him? He was always welcoming, whether we were playing in the playhouse or playing kickball in your back yard. You are all in my prayers. Sincerely, Julie (Hugo Pete)

I have many fond memories of Don, having been Arizona Ave, neighbors for 35 years. When the kids were little he always made sure we had Shrine Circus tickets and many times he walked up the street with a fresh catch of trout for diiner. Once when I was out of town during a particularly heavy snow he blew the driveway open. Don and Vivian passed the house daiky and always stopped for a quick chat. Don will be missed, but memories of a good friend and neighbor will live on. Jerry Passer

Mark and family, We are sorry to hear about Don and we will be out of town for the weekend. I remember Don with the ever-present, sly smile when he approached you. It was an indication of how receptive he was to people and it was always refreshing. You will miss him much, but will have the memory of his humor, care and his gentle spirit. He is smiling yet.

Your dad was great! Growing up you were like my second family. You took me camping and we played Rummy Royal and used real pennies. Your dad was always smiling and I knew when he was there 'cause he made the Indian war cry. He was a great guy and will be missed but the memories will be here forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Jan and Walt (The Red Headed Indian)

My three daughters still to this day remember Mr. Johnson who was the best crossing guard that ever lived as far as they were concerned. He was always cheerful, always looked out for all of the kids and I enjoyed talking with him every day when I walked up to Wright to pick up my girls. They were very sad the day he told them he wouldn't be greeting them on the corner anymore. He was a wonderful man who made the world a bit brighter. Bless you all!

To Don's Family -- you don't know me and I really don't know you but I knew Don's smile from Wright School where I was the library media specialist for some of the years Don shared his time with the many children who came to regard his presence as a special part of their day. I know he made a difference in giving each child a cheery moment as they crossed the street in safety. I did not know of his other endeavors as he was a humble man who always put the focus on the person he was greeting. May God rest his soul and those whose life he touched comtinue to smile through the rest of their days. I'm glad I knew him. Sharron McElmeel
