Memorial
Joseph Frank Cerveny, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died at home on the farm he loved on Sunday, September 21, 2008, from complications of age. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Heather Hayes. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Masonic Service by Fidelatis Lodge #364 of Fairfax beginning at 7 p.m. Arrangements are with Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.
Survivors include his loving wife, Esther, of 67 years; daughter, Joanne George Chadima of Fairfax; and son, Dale Gail Cerveny of Gresham, Oregon; sister-in-law, Irene Bontty of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, G. Daniel Jodie Chadima, of Swisher and Darrick Michelle Chadima, all of Fairfax, and Tamara Goeffrey Maddaford of Centennial, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Arik, Miriam, John, Samuel, and Titus Chadima of Fairfax, and Calvin, Sophia, and Sarah Chadima of Swisher.
Joseph was born on November 19, 1915 in rural Linn County to Joseph and Stella Petrak Cerveny. Joe married Esther Marie Plucar on August 12, 1941 t the Czech Reform Church in Cedar Rapids.. He lived and farmed all his life in the Century Farm on which he was born. Joseph greatly enjoyed farming his land along with his love for carpentry, woodworking, planting many fruit trees and a love for music. He played in various bands in Cedar Rapids and was a member of the WMT Bohemian Band for many years. Joseph was a 50 year member of Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder and helped with building the new church. He was Past Master of the Fidelatis Lodge #364 of Fairfax, Past Worthy Patron of Fairest Chapter OES of Fairfax, member of the Consistory and El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids, all over 50 years. He belonged to the Linn County Farm Bureau and was a member of the National Czech and Slovak Museum. Joseph volunteered at the Linn County Food Bank.
Joseph was a wonderful husband, loving father, and devoted to his family and friends. He was greatly loved by those whose lives he touched. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of St. Luke's Hospice for their loving care given to Joseph.
