Memorial
Dennis P. Ochs, 44, of 1349 Highwood Dr. NW, died Sunday, January 11, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services at 11 AM Thursday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday with a wake service beginning at 7 PM.
Survivors include his mother Eileen Ochs-Binger of Cedar Rapids, his brothers and sisters Terri Liedtke and husband Gary, Tim Ochs and wife Judy, Andrea Ochs, and a brother Carl Ochs all of Cedar Rapids, and a sister Mary Ann Nielsen and husband Bill of West Chester, Pa.Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Kory Ochs with the US Navy in Newport News, Virginia, Cassie and Keagan Ochs, Rachel and Tim Liedtke, and Fred and Patricia Ochs all of Cedar Rapids, and Annie and Abbie Nielsen of West Chester, Pa. He was preceded in death by his father Patrick C. Ochs in 1987, and a nephew Samuel E. Ochs in 1999.
Dennis was born December 30, 1959 in Dubuque, Ia. to Patrick and Eileen Smith Ochs, and later moved with his family to Cedar Rapids. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. He worked at Edgewood Road Hardees for several years. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He participated in the 1974 and 1975 Special Olympics, winning gold and bronze medals in field and track. In 1994 he received a kidney transplant, with his brother Tim being the donor. His corneas were donated to the University of Iowa Eye Bank. Dennis loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, taking long walks in the evening, swimming, bowling, and playing pool. He also enjoyed watching WWE wrestling and attended shows whenever they came to Cedar Rapids. His quick wit and dry sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial fund has been established. A very special thanks to Mercy Medical Center CCU, Zone 41, and the girls in Endoscopy, who all befriended him and made him feel like one of the gang!
