Kenneth L. Vanous Sr, of 105 Alwine Ct. Hiawatha, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, in his home following a long illness. Services with military honors at 1 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Dr. James Chesnutt of the First Christian Church in Cedar Rapids will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Wednesday.
Survivors include his beloved wife Charlene, four children, Dr. Gail Moon and husband Steven of Cedar Falls, Kenneth Vanous Jr. and wife Cyndee, Christine Carson and husband Tim, and Keith Vanous, and a former daughter in law Lesley Vanous, all of Cedar Rapids, a brother Donald Vanous of Peoria, Illinois, 9 grandchildren, Brett Vanous, Dr. Amy Barton and husband Dr. Joshua Barton, Rebecca Moon, Keely Baade and husband Josh, Nick Cobb, Kaelyn and Kory Vanous, and Curt and Luke Carson, 1 great-granddaughter Amelia Barton, and his beloved Yorkie 'Mango'. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Nancy McLees.
Kenneth was born April 27, 1930 in Cedar Rapids to Leo and Frances Sharp Vanous. He married Charlene Willenborg on April 27, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. He was assistant chief of Police in Cedar Rapids retiring after 19 years. He retired as Corporate Security Director of Iowa Electric-Alliant Energy, and then was a salesman for Skogman Reality. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post No 788. He was also a member of First Christian Church, Chiefs of Police Association, Iowa State Policeman's Association, Cedar Rapids Policeman's Protective Association, Otter Creek Sportsman's Club, NRA, Goodfellows, 1500 Stock Club, and the Stock Investment Club. He loved his winters in Arizona. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gambling, traveling, and golfing.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church in Cedar Rapids or to Hospice at St. Luke's.
Military honors by VFW Post No 788.
