John R. Zahn, 82, of 2305 Glacier Street SW died Thursday, June 12, 2003 at his home after a long illness. Services at 10 AM on Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Rev. Steven Rosonke will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery where there will also be military rites. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 6 PM on Sunday where there will be a vigil service at 5 PM.
Survivors include his wife, Doris, two sons, William and his wife, Mary of Cedar Rapids, Rocky and his wife, Nancy of Amana, three daughters, Ruth Zahn of Vinton, Jeanette Hiser of Fountain, CO. and Penny Ackerman and husband Richard of Cedar Rapids; four sisters, Mary Evens and husband, Pearl of Urbana, Lavone Lee and husband, Bob of Vinton, Mardell Lint and husband, Stanley of Shellsburg, Hazel Rublock and husband, Harry of Vinton; three brothers, C. Lavern and wife, Esther of Grandview, WA., Walter and his wife, Sandy of Shellsburg and Paul and his wife, Mike of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mable Franks, his parents, two brothers, Oliver and Albert and four sisters, Ruth Zahn, Dorothy Zahn, Marie Anglin and Lois Lee and a grandson, Benjamin Ackerman.
John was born on Aug. 11, 1920 in Benton County, the son of John and Verna Rambo Zahn. He married Doris J. Martin on June 6, 1948 in Center Point. John was a 30-year veteran of the Army and Army Reserve, retiring in 1985. He later worked in the plumbing business in Cedar Rapids and retired from the Iowa Men's Reformatory Maintenance Dept. in Anamosa after 13 years of service. He was received by Christ at All Saints Catholic Church in 1989 and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church since 1998. He was also a member of VFW Post No. 788 and the Marion American Legion Post No. 298. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. A memorial fund has been established in John's name.
