Memorial

John E. Vavra, 53, of 400 W. 8th AVE. Marion died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at St. Lukes Hospital of an apparent heart attack. Services at 10:30 AM on Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Rev. Stan Wierson and Rev. Nick Longworth will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon, two sons, Jason and his wife, Eugenia of Marion, Chad of Marion and NY., his mother, June Vavra of Cedar Rapids, two brothers, Robert and his wife, Barbara of Marion and Mark and his wife, Patricia of St. Louis, MO. He is also survived by his brother in law, Rick Sampson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
John was born on May 22, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert Otto and June Starman Vavra. He graduated from Jefferson High School and was involved in Thespians there. He later received his BS and MS degrees from Iowa State University. He married Sharon L. Sampson on Nov. 27, 1971 in Cedar Rapids. John was a Safety Inspector for the Travelers Insurance Co. for 23 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion and was an adult Scouter with the Boy Scouts of America. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Howard H. Cherry Scout Camp in Central City in John's name.
