** Robert Leonard Thompson, 83, of 1821 8th Ave. SW. died Sunday Aug. 31, 2008 at St. Lukes Hospital after a long illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where friends may call after Noon on Wednesday. Rev. Robert Voels will officiate. Burial with military rites at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, a son, David of Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Barbara Neil Van Slyke of Ames. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Amy (Andy) Richardson, Julie Van Slyke and her fiancé, Kevin Larsen, Tricia Higson, three great granddaughters and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marilyn Scriven and a daughter, Janet Thompson Snow. Bob was born on June 9, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Floyd and Ellen Nelson Thompson. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in the class of 1943 and attended the University of Iowa. Bob married Dorothy H. Schmidt on April 17, 1948 in Cedar Rapids and was an engineer at Northwestern Bell for over 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Crescent Lodge # 25 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, American Legion Hanford Post No. 5, the VFW, the DAV, Communications Workers of America, Telephone Pioneers, the Boy Scouts of America, where he earned the Silver Beaver award in 1979 and volunteered at Cleveland Elementary School for 10 years. Bob proudly entered the Army in the fall of 1943 during WWII. He was a member of the Ninth Infantry Division, 60th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion Signal Corps Command Post. Bob was a loving and devoted husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa and will be missed by his family and many friends. Memorial donations may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church in Bob's name.
