Memorial
Duane Keith Ely, 83, of 5101 Spencer Dr. SW, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2008, at his home among family and friends. Services, with military honors, commemorating his life will be held at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Friends may call at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Saturday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Lois; sons, Tom Diane of Belleville, Illinois, Tim LuAnn of Homestead, Florida, Terry of Solon; and daughters, Kay of Shakopee, Minnesota and Tina Dale Carter of Lead, South Dakota. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister Jereta Logan; brother Richard Emmert of Marion, Illinois; and best friends the George Snyder family of Anamosa. He was preceded in death by his parents and good friend Skip Snyder.
Duane was born May 2, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to Robert and Bhula Ely. He served in the Navy doing duty in the South Pacific from 1942 – 1946. He married Laurine Clark in 1949 and raised five children in Mt. Vernon from 1959 – 1972 and was active in Boy Scouts, the American Legion, and owned the South Side Tavern. In 1977 he married Lois Henry while living in Cedar Rapids and working for Cherry-Burrell. In 1977 Duane and Skip Snyder started and operated Central Rebuilding Service until his retirement in 1989.
Duane enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, and local youth sports. He spent much of his retirement doing renovation and wood working projects for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions maybe made to St. Luke's Hospice, or to the American Cancer Society.
Military honors by Hanford American Legion Post #5.
