Memorial

Vance C. Oliphant, 83, of 4580 Johnson Ave NW #8, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at his home following a short illness. Services will be at 10:30 AM Monday in St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Rev. Gary Hoyt will officiate. Burial with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday and at the church after 9:30 AM on Monday.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Lois "Lorraine", three sons Gary of Cedar Rapids, Dennis of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Dale of Pearland, Texas, a sister Verna Cabbage of Odessa, Texas, a granddaughter Carrie Enos, and three great grandchildren Maria, Morgan, and Christian Enos, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Velma and Naida; and three brothers, Wayne, Lynn, and Ross.

Vance was born on February 18, 1925 in Belle Plaine, Iowa to Garnet Oliphant, the recent widow of Fred Oliphant. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1943 and served in the Army Air Corps from July, 1943, until April, 1946. He married Lois Lorraine Phelps on November 14, 1948 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was employed by Collins Radio Company as an industrial engineer and assembly line supervisor for 20 years; by Turner Microphone Co. in the same capacity for 7 ½ years, and by Telex Communications, Inc. for 10 years after they acquired Turner Microphone. He retired November 1, 1989 and returned to Cedar Rapids to be near family members.

He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and Hanford American Legion Post #5. His hobbies included writing poetry and stamp collecting. He was devoted to his Friday morning Bible Study.

Military honors by Hanford American Legion Post No 5.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Cancer Society.
