Franklin J. Kilpatrick, 92, of 220 – 19th Street NE, died at Mercy Medical Center, Sunday, July 20, 2008 of natural causes. Memorial Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday after 12:30 p.m.
Frank was born on June 26, 1916 in Adrian, MN to Frank and Florence Kilpatrick. Franklin retired in 1981 from the University of Iowa after serving twenty years on the faculties of the Department of Preventative Medicine and the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering. Also during this period, he served as Director of the University's Environmental Health Service, which was responsible for exercising surveillance over matters of environmental health and safety on campus. During the twenty years preceding his University services he served in a public health engineering capacity with the Minnesota State Health Department. He left there as the Assistant Director of the Division of Environmental Sanitation.
Franklin received a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota. He was registered as a Professional Engineer in the state of Minnesota from 1947 to 1965. He was a Fellow in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the American Public Health Association and the American College of Health Association. He served as a member of the Executive Board of the latter Association during 1967 through 1972; the last year of which he was the Association's President.
Franklin received a certificate of twenty years for Meritorious Service from the State Health Officer of Minnesota, the Ruth Boyton Award in recognition of distinguished service to the American College of Health Association and the Alfred Hitchcock Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to the Field of College Health.
Frank is survived by his wife, Phyllis; four children, Judith Ann Kilpatrick of Chicago, IL, sons, David Nancy Kilpatrick of Pinehurst, NC, Jon Kilpatrick of Coralville, and Robert Kilpatrick of Tomball, TX; six step children, David Susan Madlock of Dana Point, CA, Gordon Jaketta Madlock of White Lake, MI, Jayson Rachel Madlock of Fruitland, IA, Judy Bridges of Houston, TX, Marcia Kilpatrick Madlock Darin of Durant, IA and Kenneth Teresa Madlock of North Liberty, IA; 18 step grandchildren; and 15 step great grandchildren. His parents, two sisters, Katherine Kilpatrick and Martha Billings, and two brothers, Emerson and Philip Kilpatrick preceded him in death.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to be used for scholarships at the University of Iowa.
