Doren Eugene Kuster, 55, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, June 1, in the loving arms of his wife and children, in his home, after fighting brain cancer for two years. The family will celebrate Doren's life at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. and a funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion on Thursday, June 5, at 11:00 a.m. with luncheon to follow. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Doren was born and raised in Burlington, Iowa, by his parents Zach and Jeanette Kuster. He was the youngest of ten children, in a loving and wonderful family. His childhood included great times with friends, sports, music, and days spent exploring by the Mississippi River. He graduated from Burlington High School and from the University of Iowa. He was married to Linda Ann Bernauer on September 2, 1979.
Doren had a successful professional career in sales and management with Certain-Teed Daymond, Advanced Drainage Systems, and his own business, Corridor Sales Consultants. He was a natural born salesman, backed by integrity, a strong work ethic, and a smart business sense.
Doren had many loves in his life, the most important being his relationships with God, his family and friends. He enjoyed so much that life offers: music, tennis, following sports especially the Hawkeyes, Cubs, and Bears, theatre, traveling, reading, dancing, good food, and an occasional black and tan at the Irish Democrat. He had a beautiful singing voice, could tell a great joke, was interested in the world and was a strong, persevering, thoughtful and caring person. Doren could light up a room, truly loved life and did his best to be a good person and follower of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, and children; Jacqueline J Kuster, Cedar Rapids, and Daniel Doren and John Paul, at home. He is also survived by his four brothers; Dwight Gerry Kuster, Tom Jeannie Kuster, Dean Sherry Kuster, and Dennis Joyce Kuster, and five sisters; Mary Levins, Sandra Mike Finnegan, Karen Larry Eickmann, Jan Frank Hennenfent, and Deborah Jim Eastburn. He is mourned by his father-in-law, Norbert Bernauer, his wife's family, Maribeth Hill, Michael and Leona Bernauer, and Sharon and Bill Bryers, and family friend Bonnie Duane Werning. His extended family is filled with people he loved, including 36 nieces and nephews, especially his nephew and friend, Dwight Kuster, Jr. Ellen. Doren will also be missed by many good friends, some lifelong, others came more recently into his life.
Doren was preceded in death by his parents, Zach and Jeanette Kuster, his mother-in-law, Juanita Bernauer, his brother-in-laws Pat Levins and Michael Hill, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family wants to express its deepest gratitude for the support and love extended by so many people over the last two years, including Dr. Carlisle and the staff at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, Dr. Mary Ann Nelson, Duke Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and Hospice, and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
