John L. VanAlst, 87, of Robins, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Visitation: 4 to 7 pm Friday at Cedar Memorial Grant Wood Chapel. Services: 11 A.M. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Grant Wood Chapel by the Rev. Mark Lofquist of Toddville Methodist Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Maxine Thenhaus of Anderson, TX; a special friend, Anna Ealy; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fay; parents; sister, Helen; brothers, Leslie, Earl, Howard, and Alva.
John Lee VanAlst was born on May 12, 1920 in Toddville, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Lorena Haynes VanAlst. He married Pearl Fay Brown on June 10, 1941 in Iowa City. She passed away in 1973. John worked as a mechanic for many years at the Allen Motor Company and the City of Cedar Rapids. He proudly served his country in WWII with the Army and received numerous ribbons. He will always be remembered for his generosity, helpfulness, and his caring attitude towards everyone.

In lieu, a memorial fund ahs been established for St. Luke's Hospice.
