Bernard "Ben" James Goedken, 70, 1517 Cottonwood Lane NE died Monday, February 18, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald Klein will officiate. Burial: 1:00 P.M. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Prairieburg. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday from 4PM to 8PM with a Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. .
Surviving in addition to his wife Janice are five sons, Phillip Lisa of Waterloo, David Jamie of Monticello, Jeff of Cedar Rapids, Bradley Kelly of Colleyville, TX and Michael of Sparta, NJ; two daughters, Laura Goedken of Hudson, NH and Lisa Tom Meyers of Walford; four sisters, Alice Baker of Egan, MN, Sr. Laura Goedken, OP of Iowa City, Dorothy Schumann of Cedar Rapids and Judy Grob of Cascade; two brothers, Clarence of Monticello and Paul of Grinnell; and 18 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Fr. James Goedken; and an infant sister, Rosemary.
Ben was born July 6, 1937 in Delaware County the son of Cletus and Edith Miller Goedken. He graduated from Monticello Sacred Heart High School and received his Associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood Community College. He married Janice M. Simmons on November 14, 1959 in Prairieburg. Ben farmed from 1958 to 1988, and then worked for Cargill from 1988 until his recent retirement. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army.
Ben's family would like to extend a special thank you to the Oncology Associates, Dr. Leila Kutteh and to his hospice nurse Kristin.
