John W. Joyner, 53, of Iowa City, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died November 3, 2007 in his home. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife Cindy; son Daniel Joyner and wife Sovy, and their son Gavin all of Atlanta, GA; daughter Jennifer Joyner and special friend David Heck of Iowa City; his brother Thomas D. Joyner, Jr. of Clermont; sisters Ellen Czarnecki and special friend Ron Schwandt of Norway, Georgina Arnold and husband Don of Kansas City, MO, and Debra Dawson and husband Rick of Des Moines; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas D. and Elaine Joyner, a daughter Stacy L. Joyner, a brother Al Joyner, and a sister-in-law Patricia Joyner.

John William Joyner was born July 23, 1954 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, the beloved son of Thomas Donald and Elaine Brague Joyner. He was a 1972 graduate of Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He served his country honorably from 1972 to 1976 in the United States Marine Corps, and served in the presidential helicopter squadron, aboard HMX-1, for which he received the Presidential Service Medal. After his service to the country, he went on to attend the University of Iowa. He was united in marriage to Cynthia Kindrick on October 13, 1973 in Cedar Rapids. He was employed for several years at the University of Iowa as a custodian teaching manager, and later at Park View Free Evangelist Church. He was most recently employed as a custodian at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. John was an avid reader of fantasy novels, a golfer, and a historian. Above all, his greatest enjoyment in his life was the great love he had for his family. He will forever be remembered as having his main focus being his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, and will be greatly missed by those whom are left behind.
