Hal "Van" E. Van Nest, Sr., 94, of Cedar Rapids, died July 13, 2007 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a short illness. Funeral Mass 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Steven Rosonke will officiate. Inurnment: 3:00 PM, Tuesday, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Chapel of Memories Mausoleum. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 71 years Alberta; son Hal E. Van Nest, Jr. and wife Jule of Moline, IL; daughter Patricia A. Griffin of Charles City, IA; daughter Sandra K. Giegerich and husband Roger of Sebring, FL; 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Wayne, and two sisters Velma and Marjorie.
Hal "Van" Everett Van Nest, Sr. was born May 22, 1913 in Brownville, Nebraska the beloved son of Harry C. and Lauretta Kortright Van Nest. He was united in marriage to Alberta Mary McAllister on August 17, 1935 at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque, IA. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II as a Radar Technician. He was a graduate of Business College and had a successful and long career as a Sales Representative for various companies, and retired with People's Furniture. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and a former member of the American Legion, Elks Club, Eagles Club, and the Traveling Salesmen Organization. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend of many and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Hal's honor may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, IA, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
