For 35 years the self-taught taxidermist attracted trophy fish and game from other sportsmen in Eastern Iowa. The basement in his home where "Doc's Taxidermy" was located contained a menagerie of trophy specimen; deer, antelope, bear, fish, ducks, geese, turkey, raccoon, mink, and game of all types. Approved by the State and other certifying organizations, he also mounted osprey, coyote, and songbirds brought by officers of the DNR or county conservationists. Some of his work can be found in state and county owned lodges and educational exhibits. He traveled extensively in South America, Mexico, Europe, Italy, Scotland, England, and Australia always with fishing gear tucked into his travel bags.
He served in the United States Navy as a Radioman 2nd class and had convoy duty in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He finished WW II in the South Pacific, Australia, and New Guinea and was stationed in Saipan and Marianna Islands in the joint communication center. He is a graduate of Coe College.
