Lee A. Ilten Jr.: 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, April 14, at Mercy Medical Center following a courageous yet brief battle with cancer. A celebration of his life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Jonathan Offt officiating. Entombment will be in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and at the church after 9:30 on Wednesday. A reception will follow at the Cedar Rapids Country Club. Lee is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ethel of Cedar Rapids, his son, Dan Ilten and wife Suzanne of Edina, Minnesota, two daughters, Pamela Strauss and husband Steve of Cedar Rapids and Vicki Peters and husband Stacey of Bourbonnais, Illinois, a daughter in law, Ann O'Donnell Ilten of Nashville, TN, his 107 year old mother, Mrs. Meta "Acka" Ilten Sr., his brother Jack Ilten and wife Ruth of Cedar Rapids, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. Nearly 50 years ago, Lee was preceded in death by his father Lee Sr., and more recently by his son, Douglas John Ilten, on January 6 of this year.
Lee was born September 1, 1924 in Cedar Rapids the son of Lee Sr. and Meta Keiper Ilten. He married Ethel Vangen on March 6, 1948 in Cedar Rapids. He attended Coe College as well as Iowa State University where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Mr. Ilten was past president and owner of Ilten's Incorporated in Cedar Rapids. Lee was past president of the Cedar Rapids Sheet Metal Contractors Association where he pioneered the Industry Fund for the association. He was also instrumental in getting licensing for sheet metal contractors. Lee was a member of the Cedar Rapids Heating Board, the Trinity Lutheran School Board, Elmcrest Country Club and later the Cedar Rapids Country Club and the Downtown Rotary Club. Lee was recognized by the City of Cedar Rapids as "Boss of the Year." Lee enjoyed woodworking, crafts and photography. Lee was a kind and thoughtful man that dearly loved his family and his many friends.
