Dr. John Paul Jacobs, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, October 21, 2006, at Hallmar Care Center from complications of Parkinson's disease. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Rev. Donald Klein officiating. In keeping with his dedication to medicine, at his request his body will be donated to the University of Iowa. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Monday with a scriptural wake service beginning at 7 PM.
John "Jake" was born July 12, 1930 in Clinton, Iowa the son of Harry and Mary Mullahey Jacobs. He married Marion Degnan on June 26, 1954, in St. Mary's Church in Guttenberg, Iowa.
They have six children, Anne Johnson Scott, Dr. John M. Jacobs Dr. Kristen, Dr. Brian Jacobs Julie, Tom Jacobs Julie, Patti Hein Kevin, and Lynn Malik John Paul, and fourteen loving grandchildren.
John was a compassionate and devoted board certified family physician in Cedar Rapids for over 37 years. During his career he served as President of the Medical Staff at Mercy Medical Center. He also devoted time and talent as the team physician for LaSalle High School for over 25 years. In 1988, he was inducted into the IHSAA Hall of Fame for his service. During retirement he volunteered at the Free Medical Clinic. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He served as a lst Lt. with the US Airforce during the Korean Conflict as a navigator and flight instructor. He had a strong faith, a love of music, and celebrated his Irish heritage as evidenced by his quick wit and love for his family and friends.
