Dale Grant Newport, 82, of Cedar Rapids died in his home after a short illness on October 10, 2006. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Parker Knoll will officiate. Burial at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4-8pm Thursday. Dale is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and children Elaine Lanz of Cedar Rapids, Barbara Hoffmeier of Northville, Michigan, Paul Close of Iowa City, and Loris Arnold of Tallahassee, Florida. He leaves behind eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Dale was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Dale was born on March 5, 1924 in Cedar Rapids to Leonard G. and Edith Reichwein Newport. On July 14, 1948 he married Dorothy Hemmer Close in Cedar Rapids and they raised four children together. Dale's greatest passion was gardening and he loved it so much that he never retired from growing produce. Following in his grandparents' footsteps, he was a well known truck-farmer and sold produce at the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Farmers' Markets. Dale was often featured in news articles related to his contributions to the markets in both cities. He will be remembered for his work ethic, integrity, and willingness to help others.
