Joan Elizabeth Nelson
Joannie was one of my childhood and best friends. We grew up together on the same pew at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids. Joannie was a community leader, an activist and one of my mentors. She was my role model and an example of dreaming and then doing what God places on your heart! I was able to take from Joannie the drive to reach for the stars in career advancement! Joannie was a success, a positive example of both womanhood and motherhood. I will always remember her friendship and her compassion to serve others. My friend Joannie. Sincerely, Elizabeth Michael

Joan Nelson and my mother were very close friends. I always remember my mom and I, and Joan and Jonathen getting together and doing something fun. Jonathen and I would play while they caught up on whatever it was that adults talked about. I will always remember Joan being the sweetest woman I knew, with a big heart and a great smile that would light any room up. She possesed beauty on the inside and out. She was one of God'd works of arts. I know she will be truly missed, and my prayers are with the family as they mourn.

To the family. I know there was always a place in heaven for Joan. Even as little children growing up together at Bethel she was alway kind and loving and giving. She remained positive through any situation. The memories of our childhood have been lingering and I pray all your memories of her will help you through your mourning. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Suzette Howard Gadegbeku
