Joan Elizabeth Nelson, 46, of 205 Broadmore Rd S.W. died Thursday May 25, 2006 in the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics following a long illness. Memorial Services will be held on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Bethel AME Church, 512 6th St S.E. Turner East Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband James Nelson, a son, Jonathan Nelson of Cedar Rapids, her mother, Jeanne Walker of Cedar Rapids, a sister, Julie Mitchell of Cedar Rapids and a brother, Wilbert Thomas Mitchell II of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wilbert Thomas Mitchell.
Joan was born July 28, 1959 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Wilbert and Jeanne Walker Mitchell. She married James Nelson on June 19, 1982 in Cedar Rapids. Joan worked as a social worker for the Jane Boyd Community House, a Certified Prevention Specialist and a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor for the Area Substance Abuse Council.
She was a member of the Junior League of Cedar Rapids, and Southeast Church of Christ. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, where she lectured statewide for the African Americans Taking Action Against Aids Program and a board member of the LEAF Program. Joan also served as a foster parent. Joan was a very loving person. She was kind and helpful to all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
