Alan Jack Zazza
Alan was such a wonderful human being. I went to high school with him and even at that age, he was confident, outgoing & a real people person. He took me to The Highlander and introduced me to my first taste of lobster! I remember him leaning back, his legs crossed and a huge smile on his face as he watched me enjoy my dinner. I was lucky enough to see him a year ago last Christmas at my husband's annual party. What a great guy! I will miss him. Huge condolences to his beautiful wife Karen and darling daughters. I'm so sorry for their loss. God Bless you.

Alan's legacy will always be how he was the embodiment of the warm and welcoming spirit of Cedar Rapids. I treasure working with him on the Beach Boys visit to CR during Freedom Festival 2005. May you feel God's love holding you close as well as the spirit of the sweetest guardian angel your family and Cedar Rapids could ever have.

Even though Alan was our customer, he treated our company and family as a fellow family business, with respect and appreciation. Alan called every year personally to see if there was anything he could do to help us with holiday parties, meetings, or anything else where the Sheraton or Clarion could be of use. He never hesitated in showing genuine concern over our family's well-being, especially that of our father, Keith Fleck, as the years went by since Keith would always make the Sheraton a mandatory stop on the way to the races. It is gratifying to see the outpouring of respect that Alan has earned through his very productive and fruitful life.

My Heartfelt Sympathy To The Entire Zazza Family ... I have dealt with this very successful hotelier and his family for many years. When booking international visitors from around the Globe, the Zazza property has always been my first "Choice". This decision is based on the courtesy & professionalism shown to all clients by the "Family Zazza". Alan will be missed for his great sense of humor and dedication to his many customers who, like me, became his friend.

When Holly and I got married in 1991 our funds were very tight forcing us to have an inexpensive wedding at a another facility. When I discussed our limited funds or lack of with Alan, he insisted we spend our special oaccasion with him and his staff. Price nor profit mattered we could make payments to the hotel if we had to. Alan loved his wife Karen, children, his family & friends. He always had time to stop and chat with everyone even if he was busy hosting an event. Alan, Karoke will never be the same again without you belting out Diana by Paul Anka or a Frank Sanatra tune. You will be missed by all.

To the Zazza family: I was so saddened to hear of the death of Alan. So many significant and insignificant but equally fond memories involve Alan and the Sheraton/Clarion. My wife, Shanin Millard and I had our rehearsal dinner and wedding reception there; I resided at the hotel for a month when we were fortunate enough to relocate back to Cedar Rapids; and all of our company meetings and annual holiday parties that took place at the hotel. Or simply having a drink in the bar after a long day and visiting with Alan when he’d come through. He was never too busy to take a moment to chat, and he always made you feel like the most important person he knew. He was also a favorite customer, and always had such kind words to say about Grainger and our staff. He was a one-of-a-kind man who always seemed to be smiling and upbeat. I'll miss him a lot as both a business partner and friend. Having lost my father and our family's patriarch, I truly understand your grief and you have my deepest sympathy. But take solace in what a great man he was, and what a wonderful life he led, touching so many people along the way.

I worked for Alan at the Sheraton for a few years. He was always finding more things for me to do. From Front Desk, Bellman, Limo Driver and the list goes on. Alan gave me the chance to grow and learn, he was always a fair man and for that I thank him. He never yelled at me, rather he would take the time to show me what I had done wrong and then the correct way to do it. Alan also showed a great deal of compassion to me while my Grandmother was ill, asking me almost daily how she was doing, and how I was doing. My sympathy goes out to the entire Zazza Family. Al and I first met in 6th grade at Erskine school. He taught me all the the skills of being the class comedian. As long as I've known Al it's always been jokes, laughs, and friendship. He gave my photography business so much support and help since we started up, yet I could always count on Al to "call security" as soon as I showed my face in the lobby at a wedding reception. I miss him so much already. He always there at the hotel. I would tell brides that the service at Zazza's house would be the best. There he was at 7PM at the head of the buffet table, usually with Sue, carving meat for the wedding party, and asking if everything was all right. If there is anything we can do for the Zazza family at this painful time, it would be an honor. Al was such a unique personality and we want to thank all of his family for sharing him with us. I will always remember Alan as a man who had an overwhelming love of his family and his job. He was one of the most cheerful persons I have ever had the priveledge to be around. I will remember the sparkle in his eye whenever he talked about Karen and his daughters, and the activities they did together. I will remember the pride he took in being the host to all of the Iowa visiting football teams, how he would light up as he told the stories of how each team utilized the hotel's services, and his commitment to make sure that everything went smooth as silk. I will always remember and appreciate Alan's passion and zeal for Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust. He was the bank's, and my, most ardent supporter. He was a passionate believer in the value of doing business locally, and he wasn't shy about sharing that passion with others. I feel a deep loss with the passing of my friend Alan. I can only imagine the deep sense of loss that Karen, Holly, and Michelle must be going through. I also grieve for my friend Jack, who could not have been more proud of his son. Dear Zazza Family, I met Allan only a year ago. I work for a local print company and was just getting into outside sales. I wrote Allan a letter - - not expecting any response this is before I knew Allan!- - he called me the day he received the letter, and the next day I was in his office! I couldn't believe it, there I was, talking to Allan Zazza! - - and he was treating me as though we had been friends for years! I left that day with an order for business cards, and have called on him ever since. He'd always make time to see me, no matter what he was in the middle of. He'd say, "Sit down. Relax." We'd talk about this and that, and when I left I would be so uplifted, so inspired - - it was a feeling that I think anyone who knew him has felt. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Allan will be missed so much. He will be in our hearts forever as a person who really cared about people - - a trait rarely found in this busy world we live in.

My condolences to Alan's family. He was such a nice man. I worked for Jack at Willowbrook for two years before he sold it to Emeritus. I only recently got to know Alan from talking to him on the phone. I had to call him in need of assistance in locating the attic at Willowbrook, as the new management that had been in place before my return for three years had no idea that there was one, how funny. Alan was so nice he told me where to locate it. He even offered to come over and show us where it was. He also offered his services many times there after, with vendors and any other questions we had in regards to the building. He didn't know me from Adam, but he treated me as if he had known me forever. What a great a wonderful person!! My deepest sympathy to the family of such a unique and thoughtful man.

To the Family of Alan Zazza A wonderful, caring, gentle man - always there to help us with our events sponsored by Kirkwood Student Life. Every year, we have hosted our events at the hotel. Alan always was there personally to help with anything. Always had a gracious and generous smile. He always said "sure you can do that-even bringing in a 1934 Ford and drive it on the dance floor". Always made you feel like you were the most important guest in his home hotel. It felt like being at home, everyone was always so helpful. Such personal care, and always a thank you note signed personally by Alan for using the Clarion. Oh, how we will miss him, I cannot imagine the enormous loss the family and extended family of Alan Zazza must feel. He was everyone's friend who walked through the doors. "Hang down your head Tom Dooley...." Strumming on his ukelele, Alan sang that song many times in my parents' basement while we all of the cousins put on a talent show for our parents. How he made us all smile then and how he still makes me smile now. Whenever I think of Alan, I smile. "Hello, darlin" he'd say when I'd call. I can hear his voice so clearly. For someone who really had no natural connection to Jeff he regularly touched us by his acts of kindness and the hours of volunteer efforts given to our students. The J-Hawk community is a better place for having been privileged to have Alan as one of our supporters. The scholarship opportunity is a fine gesture on the part of you, his family. Thanks for sharing Alan with us. Larry Bowen - Dec., '99 retiree

As an employee of a firm that does business with the Clarion, I've been to the hotel about once a week, on average, for the past eight years. Every time I saw Mr. Zazza there, he always had a friendly greeting; and, if I would happen to see him somewhere else, he would remember me and have that same friendly greeting. He was a good man, and he will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. I first met Alan in 1977 when he hired me to be a "bell girl" at the Sheraton. I went on to work there for 5 more years in the restaurant in the Centurion Lounge. My memories of Alan make me smile...his pastel tuxes, singing 50's tunes with band, New Years Eves with the Elvis impersonators! I had run into Alan last fall at a Hawkeye football game and he still had a big smile and "how ya doin'" for me after all these years. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends, he will be greatly missed.

To Karen & the Zazza Family. When I heard the news that God invited Alan into his home I was shocked like many others due to your age and lust for life. There are no words kind enough to say about Alan & Karen Zazza. It didn't matter if you were the CEO of a large company, a Big 10 head coach or an ordinary person you were treated with dignity & respect. Enjoy the Karoke sound system up there & keep others off it who don't have your permission to sing while your resting with the flu bug. Your wife Karen, your girls, family & friends will always hold you in the hearts and memories as I will. Thanks for the talks. Wram thoughts & smiles: Greg

Dear Karen, Michelle, Holly and the extended Zazza and Hembree family, What can we say….we loved Alan and always will have a big laugh and a big cry when we think of our buddy. Karen, you were his #1 woman…he loved you so much and cherished every moment he spent with you. The memories you have will live on forever…the two of you as a couple celebrated life together in so many ways. You worked hard and then rewarded yourselves with wonderful vacations to locations many couples would only dream about. The time he took out of his schedule to put together our football trips was priceless. He planned a year in advance and gave us the date and then all of a sudden we were all in the R.V. together “flying” down the highway at about 80 mph with egg casserole being passed back and forth …WOW! We always had a great time together and so many, many laughs! Our favorite R.V. driver and his fantastic navigator Karen got us to our location safe and sound every time! Michelle and Holly, Alan had nothing but praise for the two of you…he loved you girls with all of his heart. He was so proud of you and the time he spent at the hotel with “his girls.” The vacations you had as a family are memories that will stay with you for a lifetime. Please know that we are thinking of you every day….You have made our lives richer by letting us share in your life with Alan. All of our love, Ed, Molly, Sarah and Dan

A&W - a made-rite, root beer and a "SOUVENIR" glass... When I think of Alan, I can't help but smile and now... shed a tear. Visiting CR on a regular basis as a kid...we had the best time. When Alan visited New York, it was clear how he loved his cousins and how much fun we had putting on shows for the family. As we grew older, as often happens,we also grew apart, but thankfully had the wonderful pleasure of getting to know Karen and finally their two beautiful girls. Alan was a gem...a person who genuinely loved life and his family...a person devoted to making others happy. I will miss his phone calls, I will miss his smile, I will miss him. My love and prayers are with Karen, Michelle, Holly, Susan and Uncle Jack. Thinking of you in this most difficult time and remembering a happy, funloving individual...my cousin. With love, Kathy

My sympathies to the family of Alan Zazza. I worked at the Sheraton not quite 20 years ago in banquets and the lounge. Alan was a kind, decent, caring and sincere man. I am happy that I had the opportunity to know him. I was reaquainted with Alan last year as he hosted the administrator, myself and other nurse managers of Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center to a luncheon at the Clarion. Alan remembered me after all of these years. Just recently, I had been thinking of giving him a call and seeing if he needed some part time help. I would also like to thank you for the lovely memorial flowers that were donated to Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center following the funeral on Friday. With my deepest sympathy Miriam Ramsden William

To the family of Alan Zazza, I knew Alan from Washington High School and always liked his fun and positive outlook. Years later my husband, Frank, myself, and my dad, Charles Searles, put on several business meetings at The Sheraton and Alan was still the same down-to-earth person he was in high school. We immensely enjoyed working with him and he will be missed dearly by many!! Our thoughts and prayers are with you! Shelley Searles Kuennen

Karen, my heart is broken and the tears flow as I remember the fun times we had with you and Alan. Bill and I would always laugh as we remembered the fun times going out to dinner with you. "I Got You Babe" was never the same through the years without Alan when we left Iowa.....steak without ketchup, etc. We love you and send our prayers for your strength...we know Alan is entertaining someone up there!!!! He was everybody's hero! and friend. I don't think Alan every met a person that he did not call his friend. God be with you and your family.

To all of the Zazza family I want to send my condolences. While I have lived on the east coast all these years, some of the best times I have had was returning for Class Renuions at the Sheraton and catching up with everything that had happened to CR and Alan. Alan was always upbeat, funny and sharing of everything in his life, and I know we will all miss him. Michael Steitzer Class of 71 Washington High School

Our sympathies to you, Sue, and your family. My fondest memory of your brother was at the luncheon in San Antonio before the Alamo Bowl 2001?. He and Karen joined Mom, Dad and me, and he was so helpful with Dad and his wheelchair, and so excited to be a part of Hawkeye-mania. Dad, especially talked about our meeting up with him there.

Hello. None of you probably know me, but my mother was one of Alan's teachers. My mom, Marilyn Bishop, was Alan's 6th grade teacher I believe. I just wanted you all to know that, throughout the years, Alan was the one student she always remembered and talked about. He must have been quite a character in 6th grade, because she would always laugh when she would talk about him. She would mention seeing him whenever she would happen to be at the Sheraton for an event. Sadly, Mom passed away this summer so she can not send this memory herself. My thoughts are with you at this sad time.

I've just been made aware of Alan's untimely passing. My deepest condolences to Karen and the entire family. As another of Alan's high school mates, I have memories of a green plumber's pickup pulling into Washington High's parking lot where Alan may have had his own parking spot. He was a significant part of everyone's high school caeer because his infectious personality touched almost everyone. He continued that effect by planning and executing memorable class reunions for us, every five years like clockwork, as I'm sure he did for most other graduating classes from every high school in CR. I'm not surprised to read of his devotion to Jefferson, our rival. Alan was just that kind of inclusive guy that never met a stranger, embraced life with gusto and brightened up a room whenever he entered it. A master at Karaoke, he tried to get anyone breathing to particpate during our marathon reunion parties. I go all the way back to being in church confirmation class with Alan and remember how friendly and boisterous a personality he had even then. Without knowing any details of his passing, I can only echo what others have said...God needed him on short notice, because there are parties to plan in Heaven. God Bless you, Alan, and keep you, and may He also keep the Zazza clan in the palm of His hand as you work through this sad time. When I think of Alan and read his obituary in the paper, I'm reminded of the toast in the last scene in It's a Wonderful Life: "To Alan Zazza, the richest man in town!" Rich with friends, with those whose lives he impacted. Brian L. Moore Washington HS Class of '71

Alan was a part of many lives, and a good person! If you ever got close to Alan He would always treat you good! It was an Honor to know him! I worked for the Zazza's and was fortunate to make it back for the Service it was hard to realize Alan was gone! We take life for granted! What a service I never saw so many people at a service, it was a clue to how wonderful Alan was, and his Family will miss him as will his good friends,’It was a very nice service. He would have been pleased! To the Zazza Family My Condolences and thanks for the hospitality extended to me while back in Cedar Rapids, Jack Made me feel like Family! Wow, such a young and vibrant man. In junior high and high school, Alan had everybody fooled. Behind the scenes, the easy going, laid back Alan was building his own little business empire. He used to come into our family business the Chandler Company for plumbing jobs in junior high and was a big buddy of my dad. He would always say to me in the Franklin hallways, "I saw Big John yesterday." On visits back to CR we would have dinner at his restaurant at the hotel. Alan was always very friendly and welcoming. He will be greatly missed. rob mckay
