Donald J. Ungs, 80, of 859 Kerry Lane SE, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005, in his home following a long illness. Funeral Mass at 9 AM Saturday in St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Rockford, Illinois at 3 PM on Saturday. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday with a scriptural wake service beginning at 5 PM.
Survivors include his wife Rita, his children, Deborah Wenger Ungs and husband Ron, Ellen Angell and husband Don, and Anne Tapp and husband Ricky, all of Rockford, Illinois, three sons Steven and wife Carolyn, and Matt and wife Kristina all of Rockford, and Greg and wife Delores of Wichita Falls, Texas, a sister Marcella Carney of Cedar Falls, Iowa, three brothers Dennis of Denver, Iowa, Clem of Waterloo, Iowa, and Robert and wife Delores of Readlyn, Iowa, seven grandchildren, Kirsten Basco and husband David, Libby Ungs, Seth Boomgarden, Beth Angell, Zachery and Katie Tapp, and Julia Ungs. Also survived by a step daughter Jane Monserud and husband Gerald of Iowa City, Iowa, and step son Tom Marbach and wife Janet of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife Mae Rita.
Don was born September 3, 1925 in North Washington, Iowa to Edmund and Frances Roethler Ungs. He married Mae Rita Jenn on September 10, 1949 in Ionia, Iowa. She died in 1990. He married Rita Marbach on May 15, 1993, in Cedar Rapids. Don was a printer for the Rockford Register Star News for 35 years retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, and the Loves Park, Illinois, VFW Post No 9759. Don was a softball pitcher in a semi pro league in Cherry Valley, Illinois with a single season best of 33 wins and 2 losses. He also played against softball great Eddie Fehner The King and His Court. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears Fan. He served in the US Army as a First Sgt and was in the Battle of the Bulge during WW II.
