Cedar Memorial Grant Wood House

(formerly Turner East Funeral Home)
This 1893 mansion, located on 2nd Avenue just east of downtown Cedar Rapids, served as Turner Funeral Home since 1924. Artist Grant Wood was paid to help decorate the original mortuary. While living and working above the Turner coach house, Grant Wood painted “American Gothic” in 1930. Cedar Memorial acquired Turner Funeral Home in 1978 and continued to protect and operate this historic landmark under its original name.
