Memorial
Jeffrey Dean Burroughs, 69, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy after a brief battle with liver cancer.
Born on May 15, 1957, in Clarinda, IA, to Glen and Beverly (Goudie) Burroughs, Jeff began organ lessons at a young age, igniting a lifelong passion for music. He played in the band "Fingers ‘N Sticks," contributing vocals and keyboard, and graduated from Bedford High School in 1975. He then joined his father in the family business, Burroughs Plumbing and Heating, while continuing to pursue music.
On August 6, 1978, Jeff married the love of his life, Jane Fry, whom he met while playing music at a Hy-Vee in Corydon, IA. Together for 48 years, they built a beautiful life, relocating to Cedar Rapids in 1986 and raising two children, Joseph (45) and Sara (36). Jeff was a devoted father who never missed a drumline performance or dance recital, and he cherished his role as a grandfather to Nina and Willa.
Jeff transitioned into the life insurance and financial sector, where for 40 years he built a successful career based on strong relationships and a desire to help others. In 1989, he joined Securian Advisors of MidAmerica in Hiawatha, IA, and later founded Burroughs Consulting Group. Known as "The Piano Man", he was actively involved with organizations such as the Associated General Contractors of Iowa (AGC), Iowa Limestone Producers Association (ILPA), Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa (APAI), and Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). His musical passion led him to perform at various trade association events, fostering many lasting friendships.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Jeff enjoyed a rich personal life filled with friends and hobbies. He loved fishing, gardening, golfing, boating, and dining out at his favorite spots. Music remained a significant part of his life; he often played and DJed at weddings and events, creating memorable playlists. Notably, he sang “The Way You Look Tonight” at his daughter’s wedding, showcasing his love for family. His playful spirit was reflected in his humorous sayings, or “Jeff-isms,” such as “Wherever you go, there you are,” and “I’m still wonderful.”
An avid sports enthusiast, Jeff particularly enjoyed Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball, and many friends fondly remember the tailgates he hosted for the annual Iowa State vs. Iowa football game.
Jeff and Jane enjoyed traveling both domestically and internationally with close friends. Some of their favorite destinations included New Zealand, Spain, and Scotland, where they created cherished memories together.
