David F. McGuire, 96, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
There will be a private family service at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum.
He was born on August 22, 1929, at Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Frank and Loretta McGuire and was married to Ruth Ann Olson in Dubuque in 1953. He is survived by a son Douglas McGuire of Plymouth, Minnesota and a daughter Victoria Burns of Cedar Rapids, a sister Mary Ann McGuire of Minneapolis, MN, and a sister Irene Jasper of Omaha, Nebraska, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ann; a son Jeffrey McGuire, his parents, a sister Patricia Hutfluss, and a brother Rev. Joseph McGuire.
He graduated from Loras College and the University of Iowa Law School. He was in the military service.
He was in the private practice of law for 53 years, retiring in 2007. He was also employed by the City of Cedar Rapids on a part-time basis for over 50 years, first as assistant city attorney, then 40 years as city attorney retiring in 1998 and thereafter as consulting attorney. Many of his assistants went on to become Judges or leading members of the Bar in private practice. He was also city attorney for several smaller cities in Linn and Benton counties.
He was a founder and President of the City Attorneys Association of Iowa now in excess of 300 members, was Iowa Chairman of the International Municipal Lawyers Association of United States and Canada for 30 years and served as an officer in the Linn County Bar Association.
He was a member of St. Matthew Parish since 1954 and was the first president of the parish council, served on the parish School Board for several years and was active in the scouting program.
He was a 50 plus year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and served as Exalted Ruler of the Cedar Rapids Lodge, State Vice President, and Grand Lodge Deputy.
He was involved in politics in his younger years serving as President of the Linn County Young Democrats and National Committeeman for Iowa, and in later years becoming a conservative.
His leisure interests included skiing in the Colorado mountains for 40 years, boating on the Mississippi River where he was Commodore of the 611 Yacht Club at Guttenberg, and golfing, having served on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Seniors Golf Association.
Instead of flowers it is requested that any donations be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Cottage Grove Place for the outstanding care they gave Dave in the last 5 years of his life.
