Memorial

John Michael Pettit, of Winfield, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on March 14, 2026, after experiencing health complications. A Memorial Visitation will be Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, with a Memorial Service beginning at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will follow at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. 

He was born on July 21, 1966, to Susan Lavon Pettit.  John grew up in Cedar Rapids and left school to start his career in construction in which he advanced as a roofer.  He met Julie Spilman in high school, and they married in May of 1985.

John enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing, hiking, camping and tubing down the Wapsi River.  He also loved taking his family on trips to Adventure Land and Six Flags amusement parks.  His greatest loves in life were his children and 14 grandchildren.

John had a wild, crazy, and loving life that he lived on his own terms.

John is survived by his children, Matthew (Jessica) Pettit, Shawn (Emily) Pettit, Tanya Pettit and Noah Pettit; 14 grandchildren; his brother, James (Amy) Clemons; step-brother, Johnathan McNulty; lifetime friend Julie; beloved fur baby Carlie; and his nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Susan and David McNulty; his baby sister Jennifer Clemmons; and his grandparents.

Following the services, there will be a luncheon at Union Station, 1724 16th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404. There will also be a celebration of life held in Winfield, Iowa, at a later date.
