Kevin Ray Heald, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully after a sudden illness on June 22, 2026, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Born on October 19, 1965, in Cedar Rapids, Kevin brought immense joy into the world as the son of Janet K. (Smith) and Raymond G. Heald. Known for his radiant smile, quick wit, and lifelong love for dogs, Kevin left an unforgettable mark on everyone he met.

Kevin’s life was rich with unique achievements, meaningful activities, and deep connections. In 1972, he was chosen as the National Poster Child for the ARC. Alongside his parents, he traveled across the United States and Canada advocating for children with special needs. The highlight of his tour was a historic visit to the White House Oval Office, where he met President Richard Nixon and received an autographed football from Dallas Cowboys star Calvin Hill—a special moment permanently preserved in the National Archives.

Kevin attended Noelridge School, a dedicated community for special needs education. He loved playing on the school’s basketball team and forged lifelong friendships during his time there. Following graduation, Kevin began working at Options of Linn County in June 1985, remaining a treasured and dedicated part of their community for forty-one years. Kevin was also an avid bowler who cherished the camaraderie of his bowling family and took great pride in competing in the Special Olympics.

Kevin is survived and deeply missed by his loving family: his father, Ray (Linda) Heald of Cedar Hill, MO; his brother, Todd (Jill) Heald of Fairfax, IA; ten nieces and nephews, and one great-nephew, including Taylor Heald (Kaleb and Jesse Goodwin), Alex Heald, Karsyn (Trenten) Wennermark, Spencer Heald, Avery Keen (Evan Behrens), and Weston Keen. He also leaves behind those near and dear to his heart, Jeff and Judy Shimek, and the Colburn family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Heald.

The Heald family extends their deepest gratitude to Discovery Living and Options of Linn County. The exceptional care, guidance, and friendship provided by the staff and housemates at Discovery Living allowed Kevin a wonderful level of independence and travel opportunities over the last three years, fulfilling many of his dreams. The loving environment and lifelong friendships built over four decades at Options of Linn County meant the world to Kevin and will be forever cherished by his family.

A public visitation will be held this July at Cedar Memorial, with details to be publicly announced at a later date. Kevin’s family will honor his life during a private family service, and following cremation, he will be laid to rest at Cedar Memorial.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Kevin’s memory to Discovery Living Inc. of Cedar Rapids, IA.
