James L. Schmidt, age 58, of Hiawatha, Iowa, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026.

James was born on January 17, 1968, in Iowa, where he grew up as the youngest of five siblings. From an early age, James had a gift for bringing people together, a trait that defined his entire life and career. He spent his professional life managing restaurants, including Perkins, Golden Corral, and Arby’s, where his leadership and easy-going nature made him a favorite among staff and patrons alike.

Beyond his career, James had a deep passion for cooking. Whether he was preparing a meal for a house full of friends and family or volunteering his time to cook for church dinners, food was his way of showing love.
James was truly the light in the room, possessing a magnetic personality that naturally drew people to him. His quick wit, brilliant sense of humor, and gentle soul made him impossible not to love. He loved his friends and family fiercely, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for the people he cared about. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and generosity, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

James is survived by his beloved brothers and sister, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Valerie.
