David Peter Kroeger was born on April 8, 1940, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Edward John and Idamaye (Laucamp) Kroeger. After the family made their home in Elwood and later in Mount Vernon, Dave graduated from Mount Vernon High School with the Class of 1958. On October 19, 1963, he was united in marriage to Karen Walter, beginning a lifelong partnership that would span nearly 63 years. Together, they shared a devoted marriage and a life filled with love, family, and faith.
Dave proudly served his country for six years in the United States Army and held a deep respect for all who serve in the armed forces. From 1960 to 1995, he was employed at Rockwell Collins, where he worked in facilities maintenance and later a lead of facilities maintenance. In the years following his retirement, Dave and Karen enjoyed 27 winters spent in Orange Beach, Alabama and many travel excursions with their family. From the love of his time spent on a farm during his childhood, he continued to enjoy gardening.
A man of service and integrity, Dave believed deeply in giving back to his community. He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church and active in many organizations, including Trojan Lodge #548, A.F. & A.M., Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids Elks Lodge #251, the National Railway Historical Society, Marion American Legion, and the Cadillac Club.
