She graduated from Ames High in 1952, earned her teaching certificate at Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC, now UNI) in 1954, and taught fifth grade for 2 ½ years in State Center, IA. While she was at ISTC, she met Marion Glen Goehring. They were married December 26, 1955, in Ames.

Virginia and Glen lived in Nevada, IA, and Horicon, WI, where Glen taught math. In 1967, they moved with their sons to Marion and Glen taught math in the Linn-Mar Community School District. After being a stay-at-home mother for years, she worked at the Linn County Department of Human Services in Cedar Rapids. She volunteered in the library in the First United Methodist Church in Marion, where she was a member for many years. In November 2020, Glen and Virginia moved into assisted living in Cedar Rapids.
