Dr. Gerald “Gerry” Gale Barker, 83, of rural Anamosa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, at his beloved BAR-K-R following a courageous two-year battle with bladder cancer. Surrounded by his devoted wife and children, Gerry was at peace as he met his Maker, a moment for which he had faithfully prepared throughout his life.

Born on July 13, 1943, in New Hampton, Iowa, Gerry grew up in Fredericksburg, where he developed the strong work ethic, unwavering faith, and genuine appreciation for others that would define his life. He attended the University of Iowa, earning a degree in pharmacy before continuing to medical school. A proud Hawkeye, Gerry remained an enthusiastic fan and generous supporter of the university.

Gerry served his country in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander and serving aboard the USS Orion. He later dedicated more than four decades to caring for patients in Eastern Iowa. As a co-founding member of the current OB/GYN Associates in Cedar Rapids, he built lasting friendships and earned the trust and respect of countless patients, colleagues, and staff members.

Gerry often spoke of the three families that shaped his life. They were his church family at Maranantha Bible Church, his professional family, and his family at home, including the extended family he held dear. He loved each deeply and considered himself richly blessed by the people who walked alongside him during his life journey.

On August 26, 1967, Gerry married the love of his life, Maureen Adair (Smith) Barker. They shared 59 wonderful years of marriage marked by faith, generosity, and devotion to one another. Gerry and Maureen opened their hearts and home through the adoption of their two children and spent their lives giving generously of their time, talents, and resources. Whether through their church, charitable endeavors, support of friends and neighbors, or quiet assistance to those in need, they lived lives of service and compassion.

Perhaps nowhere was Gerry more content than at the BAR-K-R, the farm he loved so dearly. There, he found joy in the simple blessings of God’s creation, including mending fences, cutting down trees, tinkering with projects, watching birds, and roaming his own Garden of Eden. The BAR-K-R was more than his home. It reflected Gerry himself as hardworking, unpretentious, peaceful, and deeply rooted. He often said that he would leave that special place “feet first,” and in the end, he got his wish.

Near the end of his life, Gerry repeatedly stated how he wanted everyone to understand just how much they meant to him. He treasured the relationships he built throughout his life and was  profoundly grateful for the many people he was fortunate to meet and come to know during his 83 full and meaningful years.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Maureen, his children, Todd (Melissa) Barker and Carrie (Robert) Thompson, and his cherished grandchildren, Lily Barker and Todd Barker, Jr. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Gail (Lynn) Meade and Barb Yarber, as well as several nieces, nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Adelia Belle Barker, his brothers, Benjamin Barker and Garth Barker, his sister-in-law, Marlyne Barker, and parents-in-law Roger and Charlene Smith.

The family wishes to thank Mercy Medical Center, Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, BrightStar Care, and Above & Beyond Hospice for the skillful and compassionate care Gerry received over the past two years. The family is especially grateful to Dr. Deborah Wilbur, Dr. Matthew Ferroni, and Gerry’s primary hospice nurses, Ashlyn and Allison, who went beyond measure in their care and devotion to him. Days before his passing, the family learned that Gerry welcomed Ashlyn into this world, delivering her 31 years ago. How fitting that she helped guide him out of it.

A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at Faith Bible Church on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Matt Moore from Maranantha Bible Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Gerry’s legacy of generosity by supporting a charity of your choice and by giving frequently and generously to others. Acts of kindness, large and small, would be a fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by service, faith, and love.
