Memorial

Raymond R Derby Jr., 70, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on May 8, 2025. He was born on May 7, 1955, in Cedar Rapids to Raymond Derby Sr. and Delorise (Young) Derby. Ray was the oldest of three children and the only son, with two younger sisters, Carol Derby and Patti (Derby) Lubbock.

Ray was raised in Toddville, Iowa, where he developed a deep appreciation for the simple things in life and a strong work ethic that would carry him through both triumph and adversity. A gifted athlete in his youth, Ray was especially known for his talent on the football field. His strength, determination, and tenacity are still remembered by those who had the privilege of watching him play.

Ray was a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed card games, fishing, football, good conversation, and time spent with family and close friends. His laugh could fill a room, and his stubborn streak was often a source of both frustration and fondness for those who knew him best. Ray was deeply devoted to his loved ones. He was not one to express emotion in grand gestures, but his loyalty, steady presence, and quiet sacrifices spoke volumes. Ray loved spending time with his son and soon to be daughter-in-law as well as his grandkids.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Sr. and Delorise Derby, and his sisters Carol Derby and Patti (Matt) Lubbock. He is survived by his son, Richard (Danika Sam) Derby, grandchildren Iva, Weston, Rowan, and Camryn, and many other loved ones.

A service to celebrate Ray’s life will be held on Friday, May 16, at 10:30 AM at Toddville Free Methodist Church, followed by a fellowship lunch for guests and a burial service at Cedar Memorial at 1:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Ray’s memory by living with the same honesty, humility, and loyalty that defined his life.

Rest easy, Ray. You deserved more, but you gave us everything.
