Memorial

Richard E. Heaverlo, 84, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away on Monday, February 27, 2023, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, Iowa.  

Visitation will be 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, with a vigil service beginning at 3:00.  Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 AM on Monday, March 6, 2023, at St. Jude Catholic Church, officiated by Father Nick March.  The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. 

Richard was born June 12, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Clarence and Agnes (Hlina) Heaverlo. He was united in marriage to Jean Hayden on June 4, 1960, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Richard served honorably in the United States Army from 1961 until 1964.  He was employed for seven years by Penick & Ford until he was laid off.  Richard then worked for P & H for eight years, until they closed and moved out of state.  His final place of employment was Mercy Medical Center as a Security Officer, from 1982 and proudly retired in 2000.  After retirement he spent countless hours volunteering at St. Jude Catholic Church and other organizations throughout the community. Richard worked part-time delivering flowers for 13 years at Flowerama.

Richard enjoyed woodworking, crafting model airplanes out of Styrofoam, wintering in Florida for 17 years with Jean, and meeting and talking to people. Richard could always be counted on to do the right thing in every situation, helping people without having to be asked. His greatest joys were family get-togethers. He was a loving spouse, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Survived by his spouse of 62 years, Jean Heaverlo of Cedar Rapids, IA; two sons, Richard (Ellen) Heaverlo of Calhan, CO; Scott (Tammy) Heaverlo of London, KY; three grandchildren, Bradley Heaverlo, Alexis Heaverlo, and Shannon (Randy) Walker; and very special nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Clarence Jr., Robert, Vernon, and Francis; and five sisters, Marie Cassel, Betty Gearhart, Gen Megan, Shirley Fultz, and Agnes Darrow.
