I really enjoyed working around Al for the years I was at the Dept. of Employment Services. He was fun, easy to talk with, and very committed to the Iowans he worked for and with. My condolences to Al's family and his many friends.

Al was an enjoyable person to know and to be with. I knew him during the time in his career when he was working in and around state government in Des Moines and was impressed with his commitment to his job and to the institutions he represented. His good-natured wit and ability to work with others from various backgrounds and interests were evident and appreciated. He will be remembered with respect and good-will.

I got to know Al when he worked for the State and I worked for a general contractor. He was fair and honest. I greatly admired him. He was a good man. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Our family has fond memories of Al and his family. We remember the fun days of Cutty’s campground. Our condolences to Al’s family. May he Rest in peace!???? The Wengert Family

I knew Al for many years as a former Golden Gloves boxer, union man and labor leader, State Fed of Labor Rep, a great Labor Commissioner for the State of Iowa, but most important as a good friend. And believe me Al excelled at all these things! As the Federation of Labor’s Representative for working people Al successfully maneuvered public employee bargaining through the Legislature which became law under Chapter 20. Al’s success at getting labor laws passed caused Governor Ray to promote Al to Labor and Boxing Commissioner and with all this responsibility he still made time for his family.

May memories of AL comfort you.

I served 10 years on the Governor's Advisory Safety Council with Al. Each meeting was a joy to spend with Al, a strong advocate for the workers in the State of Iowa. Al love donuts and I soon learned that in meetings if you put a donunt in frount of him you had his attention. We will miss you, Al....

I was at Cedar Memorial today and saw that sign with his service being at 11:00. I relocated to Cedar Rapids on January 3, 1993 with the first group of new hires. It was truly my privilege to get to know Al. He had a great sense of humor and a friendly Spirit. I'm so glad to have seen the sign. I passed the obituary link on to Doug Goodman, who also started that same day. May his family enjoy recalling all of the memories of his amazing life!!!
